Dear Website Visitor,
Welcome to Kouts Elementary School (KES), a proud school of the East Porter County School Corporation. We have achieved Four-Star status from 2010-2015, and last year we received a letter grade of "B" from the Indiana Department of Education. As of May 2019, we have 335 students enrolled in grades K-5. It is very important to us to maintain a family atmosphere at KES. We pride ourselves on our close-knit staff and community. Parent volunteers regularly assist during the school year by helping with learning centers, performing clerical work, and chaperoning field trips. All staff members are actively involved with teaching and reaching the whole child.
Our focus on solid academics and learning for all is strong. Our curriculum is based on Indiana College- and Career-Ready Academic Standards. Grade-level staff regularly collaborate during regular common planning periods during which they analyze data, plan instruction based on student needs, tailor individual intervention for those students needing additional time and support for learning, and share successful instructional strategies. Kouts Elementary School consistently performs well above the State average (in parentheses) on standardized testing in grades three through five. We continually strive to improve student achievement. On the Spring 2018 ISTEP+ tests, KES had an average pass rate of 82.7% (State 64.1%) for the language arts portion of the assessment and an average pass rate of 73% (State 58.3%) on the math portion. Most recently, 100% of the third-grade students taking the Spring 2018 IREAD-3 reading assessment passed. In addition, NINETEEN of those students received a perfect score!
We have extra-curricular activities available for all of our students. All students are able to participate in the after-school Followers Bible Club, held on the first and third Mondays of every month. The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) Club meets once monthly for students in grades K-1, 2-3, and 4-5. In addition, our first through fifth graders can participate in the Rise and Shine Walking Club October through March of each school year. Many of our intermediate students participate in the extra-curricular activities that are offered, including Art Club, basketball, Student Council, Porter County Spelling Bee, Spell Bowl, and M.A.T.H. Bowl. Our KES Girls on the Run, specifically designed for our third- through fifth-grade female students, meets and completes their 5K in the fall months.
The Kouts Elementary PTO meets monthly and plans activities such as Family Fun Nights and the KES Christmas Shop, selects and runs fundraisers, regularly rewards students for high attendance, and supplies supplemental resources for the classroom teachers. Please check the school calendar for information about our PTO meetings; meetings are usually held on the first Tuesday of each month. We invite you to peruse our website, and should you have any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly.
